"Opportunities, risks & threats regarding "Cold Ironing" in ports" - Posidonia Event
Piraeus, 06/06/2022
On the first day of Posidonia Events, the Port of Heraklion presented the project "Electriport" which was followed by a panel discussion on the opportunities, risks & threats for "Cold Ironing" technology in ports.
BMG Marine, as a member of the project, analyzed the technical difficulties of the project and the distribution of loads per Dock. Different types of ships approach the docks and this implies different types of connection to shore-power. This is a design challenge where our company will try to meet by servicing as many ships as possible, utilizing the maximum of available power.
Stay tuned for more information.

Electriport - Alternative Maritime Power
Piraeus, 06/12/2021
We are pleased to announce that our company, BMG Marine, participates as a partner in the project entitled "Electriport - Alternative Maritime Power in the Port of Heraklion" which was submitted and approved from CEF, Transport MAP Call 2020 and will be sponsored by CINEA.
The project includes the elaboration of a complete set of studies and engineering designs for the development of On-shore Power Supply (OPS) technology for all type of vessels at the core maritime Port of Heraklion, Crete. It is important to investigate the use of renewable energy sources in order to further reduce the amount of CO2 emissions in the port area. The project completion is scheduled by Q1 2023.
The corporate scheme consists of the following bodies:
Our goal is to make the port of Heraklion, Crete one of the first ports where the "Cold Ironing" technology will be applied. We believe that through the project Electriport the appropriate conditions will be created for the development of dialogue and exchange of know-how at a global level in order to design actions where they will contribute to the integrated protection of the environment.
Electric Generators
The replacement of electric generators has been under the supervision of our company.
Our Solutions
With our presence and our guidance we made the proper implementation of electrical drawings. We also improved the cable routing.
An important part was the co-ordination of work progress with all the involved teams.
Ship Weight Estimation
Our office carried out the weight estimation for the steel structure of the ship NB Okeanos I.
Our Solutions
Based on the ship's construction drawings and the supervision of the construction work, we were able to make a 3D model of the ship. The 3D model consists of components that contain useful information about its dimensions, weight and position.
Marine Piping Design
Our office carried out the design of the piping networks of the ship NB Okeanos I.
Our Solutions
Starting with the diagrammatic drawings, we proceed to the design of pipelines in a three dimensional (3D) enviroment. Pipelines were designed according to RINA classification society and in accordance with international rules and regulations.
The following systems were designed together with materials lists, isometric drawings and layouts:
- Ballast Water System
- Bilge and Sludge System
- Fuel Oil System (Bunkering and Transfer)
- Sea Water Cooling System
- Fire Fighting System (Fire Line and Drencher)
- Air Vents and Soundings
- Sewage System
